The HS3/HS4 were designed for today's tightening budgets. They can be retrofit to most existing switch installations permitting a utility to upgrade switching reliability without replacing all switchgear. Turner can also provide substation and distribution switch products for integrated compatibility in new construction and complete service upgrades.Simply put, these motor operators provide a greater degree of power reliability to the ultimate customer while providing the utility the utmost in flexibility and economics.
Application
The HS3 and HS4 series are state-of-the-art, hydraulic-ram driven switch motor operators. They are designed to function manually, remotely or as an integral part of an automated distribution system. The HS3 is a reciprocating output operator, while the HS4 is a rotational output operator. Other than this difference in switch linkage actuation, both units are identical.
The HS3/HS4 improve efficiency in operating practices. Turner Electric's well-thought-out design takes advantage of the simplicity of hydraulics and eliminates the inherent complexities of older, electro-mechanical operators.
Our hydraulic system components are easy to understand and require no special training to operate or maintain. All systems are 100% tested at full system operating pressure prior to shipping.
Fewer operator parts translate into greater reliability, less installation adjustments, reduced maintenance and inventory.
Additionally, the interior of the enclosure is large and uncluttered, allowing easy mounting of the host of optional equipment that Turner has available, as well as hassle-free maintenance.
Operation
The HS3/HS4 power pack consists of an electrical motor-driven, slip-free, high-output hydraulic pump and powerful, high-output hydraulic ram. The fluid reservoir is made of high-strength plastic and is translucent for ease in determining proper fluid level. The motor drives the pump in a single direction, utilizing positive, solenoid-operated valves to direct fluid to the proper end of the cylinder. On remote or local command, the solenoid starts the DC motor, instantaneously develops hydraulic pressure and energizes the "open" valve. Fluid is then forced into the ram at 1500 psi.
Maximum full system operating pressure is 2000 psi, producing 14,000 inch-pounds of shaft output. This maximum torque makes the HS3/HS4 operators compatible with most existing switch designs. Steady-state pressure is zero to minimize system stress, prolong component life, and dramatically increase system reliability. Pressure relief is factory preset at 2000 psi to eliminate over-torquing.
The hydraulic pressure that is generated at 1500 psi to 2000 psi extends the ram's shaft, which delivers the necessary force to the main torsional drive output assembly and opens the switch. That output is reciprocating in the HS3 and rotational in the HS4.
Closing is accomplished by reversing the above sequence. When hydraulic pressure is expended on the top of the ram, the shaft retracts and the switch closes. Drive-shaft mounted auxiliary switches control "open" and "close" limits.
The electrical circuitry used in the HS3/HS4 motor operators is uncomplicated and easy to repair or replace. Components are "locally available," which decreases downtime should repair be necessary.
The enclosure is a gray NEMA Four equivalent, and is available in custom sizes. It has ample space for factory- or customer-supplied electronics and batteries, reducing the possibility of add-on items causing unsightly and potentially dangerous "pole-clutter."
Both operators utilize a hydraulic ram as the power transfer device, eliminating expensive electro-mechanical drive systems. The advantages are obvious. Fluid drive is self-lubricating and virtually eliminates power-robbing friction. No gear-reduction box means no gears that can break or slip.
There is no loss of torque since the full force of the hydraulic fluid acts instantaneously and directly on the ram, which is directly attached to the rotating shaft that drives the switch operating linkage.
In addition, fluid power has a "cushioning" effect on the linkage that absorbs torsional flex from the linkage, minimizing possible internal damage on the operator. Mechanical operators have no "cushioning" capability, so every shock, jolt and vibration from the switch is transmitted directly to the operator components, possibly impacting equipment life.
The enclosure is environmentally sealed (NEMA Four specs). Contaminants cannot get into the operator, and should there be leakage from the hydraulics, fluid cannot escape, ensuring environmental integrity.

Turner's HS3/HS4 are easily retrofit to virtually all in-place air-break switches. Installation is quick and simple, requiring only a crescent wrench and no "special" training. The mounting bracket is strong, durable, light-weight extruded Aluminum. Once securely fastened to the pole or structure, it provides an extremely secure base for the operator.
The HS3 Side-Mounted, Reciprocating Output Ram Operator
The HS3 ram operator delivers fast, reliable reciprocating motion through a field-adjustable, axial-output drive mechanism, which is bolted to the side of the enclosure. The axial drive is engineered to provide quick and simple adaptation to various switch designs; either manufactured by Turner or others. A positive mechanism "lock" is provided in the hydraulic system (a "zero-leak" check valve circuit) to insure there is no "mechanism drift" after each operation.
The HS3 axial output lever assembly provides for 90º to 180º rotation.
A multitude of bolted connection points on the output assembly provide from 7 inches to 12 inches of total vertical switch operating linkage travel. For installation requiring less than 7 or more than 12 inches of travel, consult the factory.
Final "fine" adjustment is accomplished electrically through the use of field-set, cam-activated, limit switches inside the enclosure, on the main axial drive spindle.
The combination of these three methods provides virtually unlimited throw-length adjustment possibilities.
Manual operation is possible to permit testing of ram operation independent of switch movement, or in the unlikely event of malfunction.
The HS4 Top-Mounted, Rotational Output Ram Operator
The HS4 unit uses rotational output to open and close the switch. The vertical operating pipe fits firmly in the manual handle assembly coupling and is secured with piercing set screws. This interface allows the HS4 operator to exert the torque necessary to transfer the required force from the hydraulic ram to the drive output of the switch without stressing the system.
Adjustable stop positions allow up to 130º of travel, well within the specifications of existing systems. Normal operating range of travel is 80º to 120º.

The spacious enclosure has adequate space for factory- or customer-supplied electronics and batteries, reducing the possibility of add-on items causing unsightly and potentially dangerous "pole-clutter."

Switch-Ability
Answering utilities demand for innovative, easily installed and maintained distribution automation products, Turner offers two (2) integrated electronic remote switching packages. We've combined field-proven Westronic or EnergyLine electronic controls with the Turner families of HS Motor Operators and U/D/S/1 Unitized Distribution Switches to provide the most advanced and flexible Automated Distribution Switching System available today. The control portion of the Turner system is contained in a single, weather-resistant enclosure. Motor operator, electrical and electronic systems, as well as batteries and their associated management system, are combined within the standard 26 X 30 X 12 enclosure, eliminating unsightly pole clutter and external connections. System reliability is significantly improved over systems that employ "add-a-part" technology.
Equally important is the ease of maintainability of all the components, which are at ground level.
The only portion of the Turner Automated Distribution Switching Package that's on top of the pole is the part designed for pole top operation -- the switch. Field-proven mechanical linkages connect the control and operator to the switch. This reduces the possibility of outages due to component failure, which could force crews to work near an energized area.
Two Control Systems
The Choice is Yours - Westronic or EnergyLine Electronics.
The Wesdac DARTTM integrates multiple monitoring and reporting functions in one package, eliminating the need to install other expensive, space consuming equipment. When incorporated into Turner's HS3/HS4 Motor Operator enclosure, it delivers tomorrow's state-of-the-art RTU today!
Turner has defined the next class of decentralized Distribution Automation control packages by integrating EnergyLine RTU electronics into the HS3/HS4 Motor Operator enclosure.
Users are now able to select from either standard RTU functions or advanced, on-site custom intelligence routines that will allow them complete flexibility of operation.
Interface Compatibility
Electronic interfaces in either automation package are compatible with most communication mediums such as FM radio, microwave, telephone (hard wire) and fiber optics. Most open protocols utilizing byte technology are supported. We recommend consulting our engineering department for detailed discussions.Battery Management
Power is supplied by wet-cell batteries. The unit is equipped with a sophisticated Battery Management System (BMS) that can be programmed to charge and equalize the batteries in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, as well as monitor battery condition.A periodic load test will be applied by the BMS to ensure adequate energy is present for dependable operation.
Switch Compatibility
As a turn-key installation, combine the Automated Distribution Package with Turner's U/D/S/1 (unitized distribution switch). Reliability is built-in. And field-proven!Other switches, already installed on your system, can be updated to today's requirements, offering both economic and time-saving benefits.
